2018 Ford Expedition – Redesign

2018 Ford Expedition redesigned model

An upcoming SUV, 2018 Ford Expedition has been captured in camouflage near Dearborn. The current Expedition has been around since 2006 and despite the fact it received a few updates during its long lifetime, the SUV remained on the same ancient platform which made it drive poorly, it used a lot of fuel and on top of that its engines were not the best all the time. The current model has been revised last year and it received EcoBoost power so it is a lot more fuel efficient than it used to be.

However, it still is old and it feels old being one of the less comfortable SUVs on the market. In order to change that Ford plans a massive overhaul of their full size SUV but unfortunately this will not come too soon. According to spy photos, this model will be as the previous edition, when it comes size.

New Platform

Unlike the current model which is riding on a 10 year-old platform, the new generation will actually make use of the same platform as the new F-150. This means it will get a high strength steel chassis with an aluminum body which is said to reduce its weight by at least 900 pounds. This will make it just as heavy as the new Escalade and it would actually give Ford an edge with their highly powerful engines.

The Engine range – predictions

The 2018 Ford Expedition will likely make use of Ford’s 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 which is similar to that of the current model. However, this time around the engine will receive a lot of upgrades which will raise its power from the current 350 to more than 440 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque which means that the Expedition will basically receive a Ford Raptor powertrain. This will be mated to Ford’s new 10 speed automatic which will route the power either to the rear wheels or to an optional four wheel drive system which may even get lockable differentials on certain models.

The performance should improve quite a bit from the current 16 MPG on average and a 0 to 60 MPH time of 6.4 seconds to at least 20 MPG on average and a 0 to 60 MPH time better than 5 seconds! This will be possible not only thanks to the more powerful and efficient engine but also thanks to the massive weight loss.

Redesign – camouflage & spy photos

The design, while still well before its official launch, has been largely shown with the camouflaged test vehicle which shows most of the design cues of the new Expedition. The front end looks to get the same design as the F-150 with the same grille and even headlights as the truck. The back on the other hand does not look to be finished but we think that it will receive a more interesting design than the ongoing model.

The interior of the 2018 Ford Expedition will be the biggest change over the F-150. The SUV will receive an all new dashboard, steering wheel and even seats. It will come with either seven or eight seats and the materials are expected to be miles above those of the F-150 with the base model having luxuries such as leather wrapped steering wheel, premium cloth upholstery and even heated seats in certain markets.

2018 Ford Expedition Price & Release date

In fact, the new model will be released with the 2018 Ford Expedition which is still nearly two full years away. The new model is expected to be launched at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show and it should go on sale shortly after that. The price will likely stay the same as that of the current model which means it will start at around $48,000 or slightly more and it will go to as far as $70,000 in which case it will be a true competitor for the Escalade or the Denali versions of the GMC SUVs.

But, exact details about price we are expecting in first quarter 2016 year. Also, the latest reports says that new information about fuel efficiency will be in the same time.

The biggest competitors are: Lincoln Navigator, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL.
