2016 Mustang Cobra Jet – performance

The new monster named, 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet has been presented at 2015 SEMA Show, last month. Drag racers worldwide have been looking forward to a new Cobra Jet ever since they realized that the Mustang is going to feature the independent suspension, and unlikely as it seemed, they got their wish. Unfortunately, 2016 Cobra is limited, only 25 units, in Oxford White and Deep Impact Blue design.

The new 2016 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is the first Cobra Jet in more than two years, as the previous model got discontinued after 50 or so cars were sold. As you know, this is unique model and one of the most unusual cars, on world. So, Ford Company should be proud on it.

Unusual Design – Inside and Outside look

If things go according to plan, there will only be 50 of these cars, with half of them painted Oxford White and the other half will be Deep Impact Blue. Apart from the ‘colorful’ names, the 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet is going to stick to the original as far as the body is concerned. Apart from the hood pins, tires and the fog lamps (the lack thereof), the car is identical to the Mustang you’ll see on the road. The rear, however, is much more recognizable, (as you are supposed to look it from behind, as it speeds away leaving you in the dust) with rear tires and a distinctive bumper mark the Cobra Jet.

Oh, and the parachute – the regular Mustang wouldn’t need one. The wheelie bar is available, but the bumper remains the same either way. The distinctive badges are also there to avoid any confusion. And the graphics package also sets the Cobra jet apart, but this part is also optional.

2016 Mustang Cobra Jet start

Ford has yet to reveal the info on the interior of the 2016 Cobra Jet, although since it was supposed to comply to the NHRA standards and regulations, this means that a lot of the original design needs to stay. The dashboard, door panels, consoles, the whole package. This also means that various security features had to be implemented, including a reinforced roll cage, racing seats complete with five-point harnesses, additional gauges and a special shifter, designed for racing.

Under the Hood – performance

The engine underneath the hood of the 2016 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is a mystery, although it was supposed to be similar (if not identical) to the 5.0-liter “Coyote” V-8 coupled with a special, race-prepped automatic transmission. Since we are talking about a dragster, no less than 500 hp would be acceptable, as nobody would buy it otherwise.

The temperature is controlled via an electric water pump which actually facilitates better drag performance because it cools the engine down more efficiently. What makes this car unique is its suspension: it got a solid rear axle suspension, whereas the other Mustangs have the independent suspension.

2016 Mustang Cobra Jet Release Date

The 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet will reach its customers in early 2016, just in time for the 2016 NHRA season. On the other hand, some reports says that only 50 of these are planned.

The price for the 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet is going to start off at $99,990, which is basically where the previous version left off. If you want the graphics package, that’ll be another $2,000, plus at least that much for the wheelie bar, meaning roughly $103-104,000 for the bare essentials of modern drag racing.

The biggest rivals are: Chevrolet COPO Camaro and Dodge Challenger Drag Pak.
