2016 Ford Ranger vs 2016 Toyota Hilux

While the US has its own dedicated truck models, the rest of the World has to do with some other trucks that have been designed to offer a lot more versatility than what the US market gets. Two of the best selling trucks in the World are the Ranger and the Hilux which not only offer extreme reliability but also great interiors and a lot of features that make them the most capable trucks out there. Because of that, there are many people that take the 2016 Ford Ranger vs 2016 Toyota Hilux showdown really seriously and side with one or the other.

Design – Interior & Exterior

In terms of design, the 2016 Ford Ranger vs 2016 Toyota Hilux battle is a bit hard to judge because most people have very different tastes in terms of looks. However, we can say that the two are very similar in size and both of them are only available with four-door cabs. This means that both of them have a similar design with a rather short bed and a medium-sized cabin.

While the Hilux is the newer of the two, the Ranger is the one that looks a bit more muscular and slightly more aggressive with its three-bar grille and Ford’s latest design scheme.

Modern Interior

Inside the cabin, the two are, once again, very similar. However, here the Hilux is the clear winner because it does not only comes with more features but it also offers a better quality interior with a real-leather steering wheel and inserts, more comfortable seats and a more minimalistic dashboard with a larger LCD screen.

The Ranger on the other hand offers a similar interior feel but the materials are not as good, the finishing touches are worse than on the Hilux while the infotainment system is simply not as good.

2016 Ford Ranger vs 2016 Toyota Hilux – Engine

Engine wise, the 2016 Ford Ranger vs 2016 Toyota Hilux comparison is quite interesting because the two are quite similar. Both of them can be had with petrol engines in certain markets and both of them come with a couple of diesel engines. However, the Hilux gets newer technology in its new 2.4 and 2.8 liter units which allow it to tow as much as 3,500 kilograms on the top end model while the Ford, with its 3.2 liter diesel, can only tow around 3,000 which is mostly limited by its chassis.

The Hilux can be had with either a 6 speed manual or with a 6 speed automatic and the top of the range model comes with 177 horsepower and 450 N*m of torque which is plenty for most people. Ford’s offering on the other hand offers a more impressive 200 horsepower and 470 N*m of torque which unfortunately doesn’t translate in as much towing power as in the Hilux.

While the two may seem nearly identical here, the Hilux’s 2.8 liter diesel engine is not as efficient as many people hoped and in fact, it can use up to 10 to 15% more fuel than the larger 3.2 liter unit on the Ford. This is very likely because its transmission which can’t really keep up with the new engine. So, if we had to declare a winner, the Hilux has to be the better choice because it offers better performance, a much better interior and only slightly worse fuel consumption at a lower price than its competitor.

Also, in certain markets where the Ranger comes with its fully fledged 2.2 and 3.2 liter engines, the Hilux can only be had either with its now ancient 4 liter V6 or with an older generation 3 liter diesel which are simply not as refined as the engines found on the Ranger, so in some markets, the Ranger is the better choice.
