Maybe, the biggest rivals at the same time, in its class, and our larger dilemma, which is the better car, 2016 Ford Focus RS vs. 2016 Honda Civic Type R. Only a decade ago, the general opinion was that a hot hatch with 200 hp is insanely fast, and that it is almost impossible to control the vehicle, and for the front wheels to handle that amount of power.
But now, 200hp seems as a quite regular amount of power, and if you want to be taken seriously, you need minimum 300hp and advanced parts that can handle it. Ford Focus RS and the Honda Civic Type R are super-powered monsters that come from two of the best lineages of hot hatches, so both of the vehicles have to prove themselves.
2016 Ford Focus RS vs. 2016 Honda Civic Type R Design
Both of the cars come with a much more interesting and aggressive design than the rest of their class. The Type R has an arrow-headed, angular design, that is characteristically Japanese. The wing theme in the front is highlighted with a black mesh grille and numerous skirts and vents giving it a more touring car look, while the huge spoiler in the back helps with keeping the back-end stuck to the ground.
The previous models of the Focus RS were very aggressively designed, so it comes as a surprise that the new RS is more reserved than its predecessors. Now it comes with a new, unique body kit that suggests enormous performance sitting under the hood, and has the gaping air intake and rally car-inspired spoiler that are both fully functional.
The interiors are not that different from the car’s they’re based on. For the Type R, red elements are fitted to distinguish it as the fastest model. Other features include a unique steering wheel with a straight-ahead mark, metal-ball gear shift knob, sports seats, and metal pedals. The RS’s cabin comes equipped a new infotainment system, that doesn’t come overflowed with buttons like the previous one. The Focus also features sports seats, metal pedals, and a steering wheel with thumb grips.
The Engine range & Specs
The most important for a hot hatch is the engine, and both of the cars will amaze drivers when they pop the hood, since both of them come fitted with 4-cylinder turbocharged engines. The previous Type R was equipped with a VTEC system, to enable the engine to rev much higher than normal (up to 10000rpm), giving the car a race-like feeling. This new Type R has a 2.0 l turbo, capable of delivering 310hp, and making the new Civic go from 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds.
On the other hand, Ford is also familiar with the turbocharged engines, the previous Focus RS came with a 2.5 l 5-cylinder turbo engine. The new RS has a 2.3 l 4-cylinder turbo charged engine, capable of delivering more power than ever, supposedly a bit more than 320 hp. A new characteristic is the introduction of 4WD with a “Drift” mode, which, by the words of Ford engineers, makes the 2016 Focus RS one of the most dynamically capable cars on the market.
2016 Ford Focus RS vs. 2016 Honda Civic Type R Prices
With a price tag of $ 42000, the 2016 Focus RS is expected to jump ahead of the competition, when it becomes available at the end of this year.
On the other hand, the Civic GT R does come a bit more expensive, and has a price of $45000, but the company expects that the available equipment, in the trim that comes with that price, gives the new model an advantage compared to the other cars in this class.
